The PROJECT (S.D.Y.W.P.) provides both detached youth work coverage for the Swaythling Mansbridge, Hampton Park and Bassett Green areas of Southampton. It also manages the Swaythling Youth Centre. Attatched to the Youth Centre is a Workshop being developed as a garage Project where young people can learn to repair their equipment like bikes and motor bikes.
Based at the Church (The "Methy") as the locals call it is "SOUND BASE" a new digital recording studio._NOW AT YOUTH CENTRE.
The first 3 workers and secretary are funded from Southampton City Council who also own the Youth Centre and provide its staff. The additional workers are funded by The Church, and the Swaythling One Parent Housing Project. The Project acknowledges the previous support of the Rank Foundation in financing and training a worker. Two further partime workers are being employed by Southampton City Council to work in the Youth Centre alongside volunteers.
Swaythling One Parent Housing Project is a registered charity whose object is to provide social support to 11 purpose built flats for young (16-25) single parents. The flats are owned and let by the Swaythling Housing Assn. Ltd. The Charity was formed by The Church, the Project and the Soroptimists.
The Detached Youth Project is managed by a Management Committee which consists of representatives of the Methodist Church (who provide the Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary who are members of its Church Council) and members of the community, Mansbridge Residents Association and the funding bodies. By constitution it is a subcommittee of the Church Council and all staff not directly employed by Southampton City Council are employees of Swaythling Methodist Church, whose Church Council has ultimate responsibility for the Project.
The Object of the Project that has been running for nearly 21 years is to provide support to young people (aged 14-25) who are at risk, unemployed or by their nature have not formed links with the general expectations of society.
THE CHURCH HAS TAKEN ITS CALL FROM Matthew 25 v35-36,40.
As these persons do not frequent conventional youth clubs etc. the nature of the work is to find and associate with them where they are. I.E. On the Streets, in Pubs or they often come to us.
Help is by listening, giving advice, organizing character building projects such as school leavers weeks and camping weekends, helping with form filling or even accompanying young persons in court (in absence of parents).
Support and advice is also given to parents if requested. Work also entails helping with job seeking and housing problems.
Confidentiality is maintained by the workers and the Management Committee are not made aware of any of the details of individual cases.
To seek advice or find out more phone 023-8055-4936. (You will probably have to leave a message as most work is outside the "base" at the Church and this work is not 9 till 5.)
